No that isn’t me.</p> <p>Last night I was returning a few books to the library, and this guy starts talking to me as he’s eating his dinner on top of a garbage can. He asked me if I could help him out.</p> <p>“Sure, how can I help you?”</p> <p>“Can you give me a ride?”</p> <p>We spent the next hour together in my car, driving all the way to the north side of Charlotte, before he changed his mind about wanting to go to the south side of town. After about 45 minutes of driving, Larry, homeless for 30 years, told me that he just wanted to be warm, and to be off his feet. “I know, and it’s cool,” I said. Joking aside, he gave me the most thorough tour of the city I could ever imagine, and he claimed to be a local celebrity, (turns out <a target="_blank" href="http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&source=hp&q=chilly+willy+charlotte+nc&aq=0sx&oq=chillie+willie+charlotte&aqi=g-sx2">he is</a>). When we parted ways, he thanked me profusely, insisting that I made his week, and expressed to me how thrilled he was to have another friend, somebody that he knew was willing to help.</p> <p>The truth is, he made my week. There’s often a sense of excitement and anticipation among the crew — most of them know what they’re in for, because those are definitely the trips where you’re likely to end up in bed with pilots or crew. You stay in the same hotel, so all end up at the bar together. There can be a real “spring break” atmosphere sometimes, as you’re away from home, with people you don’t really know, and you can let your hair down without your friends telling you to behave. I remember a flight to St Lucia — always a good one, because you get a couple of days there. </p> <p>There’s a local guy who owns a catamaran, and someone from the crew will often book it before we fly. It’s always a very drunken affair, but on this occasion, for some reason, it turned into an orgy. There were flight crew, cabin crew, even passengers whom we’d met in the hotel bar, all getting it on. It was like something out of a dodgy movie, really full-on.
